Cinderella and the Waiting Game

The tear out was supposed to begin last week...then it was supposed to be Monday..next..and the call came this morning...it will be Tuesday...May 1...sounds like a great day to get this project going doesn't it?...I am keeping my fingers crossed.  I have heard enough about working with this kind of project to not be surprised...and I am taking it in stride...but heck..it's just the first delay...and I am sure it will be the only one that we have with the project! :)

I am spending the day playing Cinderella--translate that to I am up in a HOT attic doing a major clear out and rearrangement of the stuff I have forgotten that we are keeping. It occurred to me the electricians won't be able to find the place to put the lights until I rework the attic...It is a mess..photos to follow...UGH..

Prince Charming...where are you?

Nancy and the One Eyed Stove

Blogging about the kitchen project is really an excuse to see if I can figure out this blogging thing. I read lots of them...and wanted to try it out...so this one is my rambling about my kitchen and my thoughts...about the process.

Nancy and the One Eyed Stove was almost the title for the blog.  We've lived with only one working eye on the stove...for years--so many that I can't tell you how long. It finally quit working..so we have broken down and bitten the bullet...and are about to start the first complete kitchen redo I have ever done.

TRUTH You can cook just about anything in an electric skillet.

TRUTH  When one has a one eyed stove, one has to be very careful with menu planning.  I had years to perfect a few recipes that would work with my limited appliances.  Oh yes, and the oven door has no handle..hasn't since spring of 2010..it was knocked off by Ian with a sledge hammer...you read that right...with a sledge hammer just hours before we were feeding a lovely lunch to all of his relatives in the spring of 2010.  Ian's family had traveled from California, New Mexico, and Michigan and I was excited to show them some southern hospitality.   My potatoes were roasting in the oven and I opened the door to check on them.  The door stuck at about 45 degrees.  It wouldn't open or close.  I called for help...and Ian came...with a sledge hammer-albeit a small one- and he pounded on the door for a while.  The handle was now gone.  Thankfully my neighbor, Jane let me put the potatoes in her oven for a while.

Misty Water Colored Memories

This photo is one has hung on the fridge for many years...yes, I was little emotional to take it down!

Bless it!

I've had close to 20 years to plan this new kitchen...and here I am-literally just days away from seeing the old one ripped out.  And as weird as it seems...I am feeling sorry for the pitiful little room.  It has all of a sudden become a member of my family and I am going to destroy it. But have no fear...it's going to come OUT...next week.  Farewell little kitchen!  I do believe I will miss you.

The Before

Looking Back and Looking Forward

It's time.  The kitchen you are about to see has worked very hard for many years.  The house was built in 1978 and the kitchen you are about to see is what I would call a true vintage kitchen.  All that has been added is a dishwasher and a disposal...everything else was here from the beginning.  It's worked...sort of... for my family for the last 19 years.  We have hosted family Thanksgivings, Easters, bridal teas and retirement luncheons,  We have celebrated birthdays, high school graduations, and welcome home parties from college.  (Christmas's have been left to other family members.)   We brought in the new millinium with a dinner from this kitchen.  I prepared my Mom's 70's birthday here for her friends and an 80'th birthday lunch for my grand mother.   We have partied here when we won elections.  A lot of life has been lived in this fourteen foot room.  And it is all about to be ripped out and a completely new one built!  So let the fun begin...and forgive me for looking back about my little galley kitchen as we go through this project.
